Genre Research pt 1 Horror

           Genre 1- Horror

A- CAMS- Camera angles, actors/design, movements, camera shots.  Close up, tracking, and hand held, are all famous camera angles within movies. Close up shows one's emotions to what ever in happening in the film, a reaction to something scary, or a thought which is spoken by the main character shown through a close up. Within my film ill decide to use a close up at the very end scene with the monster/evil spirit taking my character into the darkness as the camera focuses on his face until he's taken into the shadows. Tracking if often used to portray movement in a single shot. I'd love to use it within my film during the scene which my character drags himself through the hallways in one take from the room he started in to the empty living room area of the house. Finally comes hand held, which is the perspective of the character with the camera in a hand held position showing the audience his reaction to what may be going on in the film it self. The usage in my film for this may be the same as the tracking in the way where my character ventures into the house. Actors who play a role in horror, do not exactly dress up in a way you'd expect. However it can all depend on the scenery, within a horror dinner party it would be classical and formal, and within a wooden forest would be ragged and heavy clothing. However for my film itself i would use generic everyday clothing, like jeans and a shirt as it's within a house and it's a person who woke up in the house not a clue of what he wore before. Movements in horror movies come and go in certain forms, within the movie "A quiet place", the mother walks down stairs in complete silence not to make a sound to the monster which feeds off noise from a certain radius. Within that scene she steps on a nail, in order to keep silence she continues to go slowly rather than stop to check the damage. As i said this is meant to be based on the scene and plot around the movie, if one were to be running from something then for a certain duration of the movie the movements is running, while other parts could be slowly tip toe-wing to keep silent. Within my movie i prepare to use a range of movements include running, walking, slowly creeping around within small footsteps, then full body movement. Bird eye/high angle, point of view shot, and an over the shoulder shot. These camera angles are not only fond in horror movies but are a basis to what i want to use within my film. High angle, these angles are used to make one look down at an object or character, within my movie i would use it in a sense that this character finds something on the ground to the camera shot being pointed above showing his reaction to the object. Point of view is taken from the point of view of the character to us it shows what the character is seeing, the only main part i would have a use in this for my project would be the scene in which my character finds the "painting with no face" as we the audience would see the painting he is trying to find. Over the shoulder shot, this is used a lot to show a figure stood behind a character or anything in front view, behind the main character. The only time i will be using this is when the monster/evil spirit approaches the main character once the POV scene has ended, to show that the character is going to be taken.

B- Within movie production for horror, many sounds are used through out the movies, i tended to research the olden day films of horror, such as scream (1996), and Psycho (1960), within those movies i have found sound clips such as "Scary piano", which plays a role in the dramatic effect of any surrounding once the scary sequence appears. Another would be classified as "sequence one" from psycho when the driving scene occurs and the rapid intensity of the shot carries on, becoming louder and more violent as she drives. More basis on now debuting films of horror, use sounds effects such as people screaming, loud bangs of mental to carry suspense, high pitched children singing, or even the classic horror music which grows louder in the case effect of the antagonist. I may use different effects, for say objects being slammed, or walls being scrapped but having a louder effect in a quiet scene.

C- Portrayed in Annabelle (2017) a common Mis En Scene of the movie was the scene in which the chair had been moving all by it's self. It was used to signify the evil presence of a haunted spirit of Annabelle which lurked in the house. Another form can be props used within a film, for instance the movie "The Boy (2016)". The main object was this wooden looking doll named "Brahms", once seen was meant to portray uncomfortable and an uneasy feeling within the watchers, and once this boy took on live like possessions throughout the movie they doll would disappear which gave a new meaning to the importance of having the doll in the movie. Within my film, i'd be using clocks in multiple areas with multiple aspects to tell time, it's a foundation to enforce stress and anxiety among the character while searching for the "painting with no face", which also ties into the props being used. A scene may be portrayed as one which ill create to tell the primitive on what must this character do "The character stairs at the wall with bloody writing to see what is being asked of him".  CLAMS- Costumes are the eye catcher in movies, where the actor must wear what the movie is based upon. Clothes can be used to date certain times back within a film, or just have the clothing be costumes of the monsters portrayed in the film. Annabelle (2017), had a based time line behind 1955, so each costume the orphaned children of the movie wore was based on 1955 dresses women wore, made either by linen or cotton. Lighting comes in multiple forms from a flashlight in a dark hallway to a red glow symbolizing either blood or the demon in some movies. Within the movie "It chapter 2", there comes a scene where the clown penny-wise in his true form uses these fairy lights called "Deadlights" to tap into someone fears which emits a bright yellow colors around a gray tone area within the film, to highlight that one piece in the scene. Actors in horror movies tend to be portrayed as people who can scream and run, not to say they all do that in horror movies, but need to either be aware or unaware of their certain surroundings. They learn to challenge their fears yet live with them in acting. Makeup, comes in multiple varieties, sometimes and mainly all the time the makeup goes to the creature/monster to have the characters be the realist ones in the movie, but some movies demonstrate makeup as a symbol for blood. Setting is all based upon the movie and script it's based, some movies of the horror genre tend to be outside within the woods or outback where no one can see, others tend to just be in either a town or an abandoned area (hospitals, buildings, schools, etc).

D- Editing used in horror movies in what i have researched tend to be either cut aways shots, or jump cut. Cut away are shots are good usage in making the character go from one place to another, whether it be switching scenes or having a dead body switch into another victim ready to be killed. It keeps up with the story line without having to go into detail about all the specific details behind the ending scene. Jump cuts are very important as it's a cut that get's interrupted by a single shot. Some usages of it, is changing a background while the character is still in frame, or having a figure change constantly with the background the same. It's a great use for an outdoor setting where one scene needs to have the background change from one part of the forest to another while still having the eyes on the character.

E- Hereditary (2018), i choose this film specifically for the "Evil spirit aspect", within my movie i want to have my horror film be based around an evil spirit within a house, with hereditary the plot point is the death of a family member brings a evil presence among the rest of the family. The connections both tie in very similarly with an object to survive and an unknown evil presence lurking around, i did use the modern year (2015 and up) to use an idea basis behind effects used, with new technology advancing. The 2014 "As Above So Below", portrayed a film using a camera affect of blogging on a video camera. The whole basis of the movie being captured was upon a video camera as it was a documentary horror movie, this aspect appealed to me and made me research this movie within my topic. To use a filming devise of a cheap video camera not only decreases the quality to show the effect of a single persons venture in a world portrayed in horror, but also gives of a first basis connection to the character as he takes you through the adventure among his own devise.

F- Jump-scares, is an element in horror based movies which give thrills and suspense to not only the film but the watchers itself. It can contrast to the certain music or sound element you portray whether it be a loud piano drop, or scary music which grows louder and louder. It an element with the right setting could bring a create switch in tone within the movie, in my film i have a jump-scare portrayed in the end scene right as my character had found the missing painting with no face where this so what spirit like creature comes behind a take hims into the shadow. Sound effects are very much appealing to me, you can create mainly anything with just a few items and a microphone, what i like about it is the placement of different sounds, where one scene would be a loud bang which wakes the character in my film, to the next which is a little girls melody getting louder in the background as my character frantically runs through this house. Its a great aspect which can implement sounds and music at certain frequencies and levels.

G- Lighting, not saying that lighting isn't important but the importance and effect can be way to complicated and unnecessary. Say one person uses a lighting flash within a dark room would make sense to reveal whats hidden in the dark, but having different colors and black and white sections to a movie seems to cheesy at the most part, other colors beside red only to me wouldn't be artistic in a horror sense, so i tend to rather not enjoy that part of filming and editing within a horror based film. No vibrant colors to my sense in what i am going at, which to me doesn't make sense all i prefer is a red tint and aspect in a dark scenery.
